Home Readers

At Corpus Christi we use the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme for home readers. We strive to provide our children with a broad and rich reading experience that builds the bridge from phonics to richer reading. We find that our children enjoy the real life scenarios, familiar settings and the books engage and hook a variety of readers. The books provided a perfect structure for developing confident readers and allows constant support as the children’s learning journey progresses. Through the books good participation is built through well planned parent activities that support the parents at home and allow the children’s reading and understanding to thrive both at home and school. Oxford Reading Tree provides our children with the necessary skills to become confident readers, fuel imaginations and become life-long learners.

Guided Reading

At Corpus Christi Guided Reading is a valuable time where children are given the opportunity to apply reading strategies they already know to a new text and allows our teachers the chance to assess children’ reading skills and help them to progress and develop into confident independent readers. Guided Reading occurs twice a week for two ½ hour sessions. For this we use high interest books to develop the children’s enthusiasm for reading and implement life- long skills.

‘Project X is a high-quality whole-school reading programme built to motivate 21st century children especially boys, and raise literacy standards’. (Oxford Reading Tree)

We find that our children all the way from Reception to Year Six thoroughly enjoy these action packed adventures and enjoy reading a range of texts from both the fiction and non-fiction strands.

Read Write Inc

Daily phonics is taught at Corpus Christi through the Read Write Inc programme which allows a systematic and consistent approach to the teaching of Synthetic phonics. Read Write Inc is a highly enjoyable, high quality systematic synthetic phonics programme that allows all of our pupil’s confidence in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Children are assessed regularly by the Read Write Inc co-ordinator and grouped according to their phonic ability this means that the children are reading at their ability and allows them to make greater progress. All of our staff have received high quality training in order to deliver fast pace, engaging and enjoyable phonic lessons.
